September 2008 Monthly Theme: Sister Cities

Navi Mumbai is Mumbai's sister city, also known as twin city of Mumbai. It is one of the largest planned cities in the world.

Navi Mumbai is the only Indian city to be featured in the National Geographic Channel's Super Cities of the World and was declared one of the best cities of the world by the National Geographic experts.

Navi Mumbai's Railway Stations are one of the very few stations in India which boast of beautiful infrastructure. The newly designed train stations in Navi Mumbai are a contrast with the old, congested and overcrowded stations within the Mumbai city limits.

Of the many landmarks, beautiful buildings, flyovers and bridges, malls & parks, and religious places, stations, I chose this photo of Panvel Railway Station for today's theme.

Panvel is the last station on the harbour line in Navi Mumbai.

The 14 self-contained nodal townships of Navi Mumbai are strung along the mass rapid transport corridors, designed to minimise travel time and distance between nodes and neighbouring cities. The major wholesale markets and industrial belts are evenly distributed in outer areas. Intervening nodes are for predominantly residential settlements. Each node is self-contained with educational health, social, religious, cultural, sports and recreational facilities.

  2. I like the pattern that the skylights make.

Navi Mumbai sounds like an ideal city. Have people settled well there? How far is it from your city?

  3. "Louis" didn't register for the 'sister cities' meme, but he's had a splendid time visiting those who did.

  4. "Planned city"? As opposed to an accidental one?

Love the photos though. I'll have to come back when I have more time and have a more detailed look around.

  6. The stations in Navi Mumbai are far better than Mumbai stations. Especially the approach to Navi Mumbai is wonderful. Crossing the sea is such an adventure. Nice photos. :-)

  8. Hilda: Navi Mumbai city limits begin where Mumbai city limits end. It's just a matter of crossing the bridge. Mankhurd station is the last station on harbour line within Mumbai city limits.
Then after crossing the bridge over the Arabian sea, the next station is Vashi, which is the first harbour line station in Navi Mumbai city.
Also, by road, it is just across the bridge.
Mumbai & Navi Mumbai are well-connected by road and rail.

Mojo: The regional planning authorities actually planned out the development in the city on paper, keeping in mind the necessary infrastructure. Only then, the city was developed into nodes. The city did not exist before the plan. There were only small villages on the land proposed for this city of the 21st Century.

Living in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai is as good as living in the same city as far as distance is concerned.
