ABC Wednesday - 'I' for Idlis

Idlis are steamed rice cakes made of rice and fermented lentil batter, served with sambar or chutney (which are South Indian dips). They are popular on the breakfast table and also as a light snack in India, in not just South Indian homes.

  6. What a great 'I' word! I've not had much Indian cuisine, but what I have had, I have loved!

  7. I was keen on the obvious choice 'I' for INDIA but that would take many pictures to show the beauty and diversity of my country.
So, the next thing that came to my mind ws IDLIS.

  8. That's fantastic... I am very familiar with Indian food - I love to prepare it - and I love to eat it... but I was not familiar with Idlis. I will definitely have to do some further investigating on this one and try to make them!

  13. Sounds good! I'd like to be able to try it out someday. I really have to explore the menus of the Indian restaurants here. I love roti with curry dip and vegetable samosas so I sometimes don't try the other dishes. I should.

  15. Now they are new to me despite the number of Indian restaurants in the UK - I suppose its because we don't visit them for breakfast :-)

  16. Wow looking at those Idlis my stomach has begun to make sounds.. hehehe..

    Are you a Maharashtrian?

  17. Priyanka - I'm a Sindhi married to a Marwari.

My mom-in-law spent most of her younger years in Punjab, so the Punjabi touch in our Marwari family culture was always there.

Now, my sister-in-law is married to a Tamil boy (living in Singapore). I got a chance to learn some South Indian cooking (from her mother in law) when I went to Singapore forher first delivery.

Such a beautiful intermingle of cultures, festivals, poojas and prayers and food.

I have always been interested in different Indian foods and cultures, so a special Sunday menu at my place could very well mean Idli Chutney / Aloo Parathas / Pakwan Dal for breakfast and Rajma Chawal / SindhiCurry / Rasam Rice / Sindhi Sai Bhaji for lunch and dinner.

And yes, if born and brought up in Mumbai, and speaking Marathi fairly well(by choice), loving to eat Missal Pav, Vada Pav and Puran Polis qualifies me, then I'm proud to call myself a Maharashtrian.

Now thats what I would call a proud and exemplary Indian. I too have a similar family construction. :-)

  19. never heard of them before - they sound healthier than crisps as a snack. Don't each much Indian food - I don't like spices and curry much at all - did have some lamb rogan josh the other day (supermarket microwave variety) with basmati rice (microwaved) and some prawn crackers!
