Sugarcane juice is a popular thirst quencher in Mumbai. The sugarcane sticks pass through the huge stainless-steel crusher as it squeezes out the fresh drink. Some ginger and lemon juice is often added to the juice to make it easily digestible. You can opt for juice without ice, or the ginger and lemon juice added. Served immediately, it is instantly gulped down by tourists, office goers and residents alike. Most office-goers love to have a glass of sugarcane juice in the afternoons, during lunch time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009

After critically judging the year 2008's photos on MDS, I chose this photo of fishwives as the best photo of the year. The post was ABC WEDNESDAY - 'M' for Machhi-walis. It is one of my best photos of the year.

The other obvious one was the monochrome photo of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus).

Mumbai's Machhi-walis - Fisher Women

The Mumbai Machhi-walis belong to the Koli (fisherfolk) community. The fishermen go out to sea and bring fresh catch. Now it is the job of the fisherwomen (also called fishwives) to sell the fish in local fish markets. There are those too, who buy fish from the wharf in early morning hours to sell in the market.

The machhi-walis (Kolins) are hard-working, aggressive by nature and fiercely economically independent women. A Kolin's day begins at the break of dawn. After cooking food for the entire family, she buys fish from the wharf and sells it at the local fish market, or even from home to home (to regular customers) till the fish is all sold out.

Standing out distinctly in a crowd, with sarees, noisy language (including abusive phrases) and traditional, chunky jewellery, the Machhi-wali invests most of her savings in gold.

Living a simple life, their food is usually curry, rice and fried fish.

Morning peak hour 'UP' ( heading from suburbs and other areas towards South Mumbai) traffic
at D. N. Road in South Mumbai

D. N. Road is an important road in Fort area in South Mumbai. J. N. Petit Library, Khadi Bhandar are on this road. The sidewalks are filled with vendors selling books, music cassettes, clothes, imported things like audio equipment, cameras, musical instruments and calculators etc. mostly imported from China.

The area is famous for its street shopping and the book stalls sell a myriad of books at negligible prices. Surrounded by old buildings the area is beautiful although getting defaced by the multitude of advertising banners.

Mumbai Daily Snapshot celebrates two years of blogging. It has been wonderful to be a part of citydailyphoto group. Though MDS has not completed as many photos as the no. of days in two years, it has been an amazing journey with some ups and downs.

I thank all Mumbai Virtual Tourists for being there even when I took a short break in 2007, and also when my pc failed me. It was the support and best wishes of you all that encouraged me to go on. I may address you as Mumbai Virtual Tourists but think of you as my true friends and well wishers.

'Snowman visits Center One Mall'.

This picture is from my 2007 archives. Center One Mall was decorated with a huge Christmas tree and snowman to greet visitors. It's Christmas time and I thought this was perfect for the Weekend Snapshot. I went to center One mall last week to be greeted by Santa Claus with gifts in his sleigh but couldn't photograph it. After 26/11, there is ever-increasing security in the city malls and photography is strictly prohibited. So, this one from last years photos.

If you are out shopping in Bandra, you can't miss Linking Road with it's rows of street stalls of shoes, handbags and brightly colored garments too. Here, you see a fusion of modern and traditional wear.

The street stalls are grouped together according to the type of goods they sell. There are traditional clothes in a row, followed by shoes, then bags and belts and then, many shops with branded wear and accessories. There is an amazingly wide variety and style to choose from. So shop to your heart's content.

Remember the Golden Rule: Bargain hard and offer to pay about half the asking price. If you manage to show indifference about your desire for the product and start walking away, there will be an immediate fall in the asking price.

The Versova jetty is approachable from Versova bus-stop (also called Vesawe). It is a ten to fifteen minutes walk through the fishermen's colony smelling the fresh sea breeze. One can get on one of these trawlers also with bikes, and cross over to reach Madh Island beach in Malad.

In this picture, you can see the other trawler on the opposite side too. Very closeby is where fishermen unload their fresh catch, and fish wives come here to buy directly from fishermen, and then sell fish in the Versova fish market. More from Versova jetty tomorrow.

The batata wada is a popular breakfast dish, and also evening snack in Mumbai. It is popularized as street food, eaten with pav and called vada-pav. This photo is taken in a restaurant and the batata wadas are served with South Indian accompaniments, sambar and coconut chutney.(South Indian dips).

Batata wadas are patties made of potatoes mixed with green chillies, ginger and a tadka(tempering) of mustard seeds and turmeric. The balls are dipped in herb-seasoned gram flour batter, and then deep fried. The finished vadas can be served as in the photo with sambar and coconut chutney in South Indian style, or typical Mumbai style as vada-pav, with green chillies and chutney.

The combination of vadas and the split pav is also called Mumbai's burger.

Several fast food chains specialise in vada pav outlets in the city.

The building of the J. N. Petit Institute (among the highly acclaimed libraries in India) is a beautiful heritage building on D.N Road in Fort area in Mumbai. It is a neo-gothic sculpture with use of stained glass, painted arches, and the original aisle roof. The building is built with Malad stone and limestone.
Like the gateway of india, this building is also being restored.

Brihan Mumbai Mahanagarpalika or the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (BMC), is one of the largest civic bodies in the world.

Located across the road from Victoria Terminus station, it was designed by FW Stevens, who designed VT station, and completed in 1893. The imposing tower rises to a height of 235 feet above the ground. The outstanding feature of the building is the Council Chamber with a ceiling of unpolished teak. At the entrance stands a splendid bronze statue of Sir Pherozshah Mehta.

Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. Mumbai needs them like never before. The seige is over, but has left the city dark and gloomy. Mumbai police and NSG commandos lashed back on terrorism and proved once again that India stands strong and united.

The incident has hit hard a few political leaders on the face, who have been trying to spread unrest in the city over trivial matters such as language. It is proved that we are one nation irrespective of colour, caste, language, region or religion.

This is the evening sky on Thursday last week seen from Sanpada in Navi Mumbai. The silhouette you see is of the newly constructed buildings on Palm Beach road in Navi Mumbai.

The dark clouds in the sky reflects the dark mood of Mumbai over the last couple of days. There is fear and unrest in the hearts of Mumbaikars, and we are trying to get out of the shock and get back to normal life.

Here is another view of the same place, taken from the 9th floor of Millennium Towers at Sanpada, about 45 minutes before the first one.

Thank you Mumbai Virtual Tourists and friends for your love and concern. I and my family and friends are all safe, and at home for the last two days.

The terror attacks in South Mumbai have shocked Mumbaikars. According to Star News, the rescue operations are over. The beautiful Taj Palace Hotel and Trident Oberoi Hotel has been damaged. Hundreds dead and injured, including 15 from Mumbai police.

The intentions of the terrorists are unclear. Sounds of explosions in the Taj and Nariman House can be heard outside, even now.

BOAT (LAUNCH) RIDE AT THE GATEWAY OF INDIA

A boat ride (cruise) into the harbour at the Gateway of India is a smooth fun ride.

I went for the half an hour ride on this boat with my 3 year old Krrish on 14 November, which is celebrated as Children's Day in India, to commemorate our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawharlal Nehru's love for children. It was his first time on the boat at the Gateway of India.

On the way back, the view of the Taj Palace Hotel, The Taj Intercontinental and the Gateway of India was a gorgeous sight. See it in my 'My World' post here.

THE GATEWAY OF INDIA (VIEW FROM THE SEA)

The Gateway Of India is a major landmark in Mumbai. It is the most famous and most photographed monument of Mumbai. It was built as a triumphal arch in 1911 by the British government to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India.

A short cruise into the harbour on one of the motor launches is a fun experience. Also, motor launches can be hired to visit Elephanta Caves, a World Heritage Site.

Behind the Gateway of India arch, there are steps leading down to the water. Here you can get a half an hour boat ride (they are called launches) into the harbour, or an hour long ride to the Elephanta Island.

THE GREAT RUINED METROPOLIS - MUMBAI

'Maximum City: Bombay Lost & Found' is a narrative non-fiction book by author Suketu Mehta about Bombay (now Mumbai) and Salman Rushdie, author of Midnight's Children and The Moor's Last Sigh in his review calls Mumbai 'The Great Ruined Metropolis' and quotes as follows:

"Quite extraordinary – Mehta writes about Bombay with an unsparing ferocity born of his love, which I share, for the old pre-Mumbai city which has now been almost destroyed by corruption, gangsterism and neo-fascist politics, its spirit surviving in tiny moments and images which he seizes upon as proof of the survival of hope. The quality of his investigative reportage, the skill with which he persuades hoodlums and murderers to open up to him, is quite amazing. It’s the best book yet written about that great, ruined metropolis, my city as well as his, and it deserves to be very widely read."

Millions throng to the city to fulfill their dreams only to realise later that the city is unlivable with an ever increasing population and rising communal violence, a city of dreams and nightmares.The city yet thrives on the hope and spirit of Mumbaikars.

This photo shows Mumbai's harbour, the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower (a prestigious five star hotel) and is taken from the sea, when I went for a ferry ride.

MUMBAI LOCAL TRAIN IN MONOCHROME

I think I'm obsessed with Mumbai local train travel, and leave no opportunity to show it to my readers. This is another crowded Mumbai local train at peak hours. Look at the two young boys sitting on the train roof to enjoy fresh air and avoid the crowd.

When asked, a boy sitting on the roof of my compartment said he was smarter than the rest, and didn't want to choke inside the compartment.

Statistics reveal that more than 3500 people die on the Mumbai railway tracks every year. Shocking, isn't it? It is believed to be the highest number of fatalities on any urban or suburban railway system.

Most of the deaths are of passengers crossing the railway tracks on foot, instead of using footover bridges provided for going from one platform to another, and are hit by passing trains. Some of the passengers die when they sit on train roofs to avoid crowds and are electrocuted by overhead electric wires, or hang from doors and even worse when they clasp the edge of the roof of the train and stand on window bars.

The Mumbai Metro work in the middle of Versova road is responsible for regular traffic jams like this one. I was stuck in one of the traffic jams near Manish market and popped my head out of the autorickshaw to check the sky. Got this one with the crane and I don't know what the other one is( a drill), against the light blue evening sky.

Most autorickshaw-wallas at Andheri station refuse to go to any place on Versova road nowadays in the evening, due to the traffic jams.

Nariman Point, Mumbai's premier business and financial district houses most of the financial and brokerage houses in the city. It is situated on land reclaimed from the sea.

Nariman Point is widely regarded as the 'Manhattan' of Mumbai and it boasts of a spectacular skyline. Besides premier business houses, the Vidhan Bhavan, the political headquarters of the state of Maharashtra is located here.

Diwali vacation is over, and schools have re-opened. This weekend, Krrish and I spent all day completing his vacation homework which was some alphabet writing, and identifying some alphabets and sticking pictures of things beginning with the respective alphabets.

We made this scrapbook for the alphabets and the pictures and decorated it.

Punjabi Samosas (a North Indian snack) and Batata Vadas (of Mumbai, Maharashtra) are popular snacks in Mumbai city. Wherever you go, you are sure to see a snack stall, or a corner in a sweet shop for selling samosas and vadas.
Seeing samosas and vadas together in every stall reminded me of the recent differences and disputes in the city about Hindi and Marathi. When samosas and vadas are still together and relished by all Mumbaikars alike, why can't the North Indian (who is born in Mumbai or has migrated to Mumbai) and the local Marathi Mumbaikar (popularly known as Marathi Manoos) live in peace? Or for that matter, even people from other cultural backgrounds.

As I see it, till a few years ago, the fight was about religion - Hindus & Muslims. Today it is over language. Soon, it will be over higher caste and lower caste. And then between man and woman. It is never ending OR it can end right now.
Wake up, fellow Mumbaikars before it's too late. The politicians are cashing on voter's emotions. After 60 years of Independent India, our political leaders are using the 'Divide & Rule' policy against their voters-YOU.
The common man of Mumbai does not have any trouble with his North Indian or his Marathi speaking colleague or neighbour. Mumbaikars of all communities and religions join in to celebrate each other's festivals, and help in times of trouble. No one is looking forward to being dictated by rulers, in the name of religion and language.
My Vegetable Vendor (Bhaji wali) likes me asking her the price of vegetables in Marathi( we learnt it in school), and sometimes promptly replies in Hindi or even English, as if to indicate that she knows more than the Marathi language. We Mumbaikars love each other and co-exist peacefully in the city.

WE MUMBAIKARS ARE TOGETHER,

Plaza is one of the few old movie theaters of Mumbai, located in Dadar West. It was damaged during the 1993 bomb blasts/riots. It has now re-opened and remains one of the few theatres in Mumbai that show Marathi movies albeit almost as a Matinee show, and regular shows of Hindi movies

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) is a historic railway station of the Mumbai suburban railway, as well as for some long-distance trains. It serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways in India and is one of the busiest railway stations in India.

It is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in India, blended with themes deriving from Indian traditional architecture.
Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay (now Mumbai).

It took 10 years to complete and was originally named "Victoria Terminus" in honour of the reigning Queen Victoria. In 1996, in keeping with the policy of renaming locations with Indian names, the station was renamed by the state government after Chhatrapati Shivaji, a famed 17th century Maratha king.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Teminus is a part of the World Heritage Collection.

Nariman Point

Nariman Point is the business hub of Mumbai. Named after Khurshid Nariman, a Bombay Municipal Corporation corporator.

Nariman Point is located on land reclaimed from the sea. It has some of India's premier business houses such as Air-India, Indian Express, Mittal Towers, LIC...The average property cost and rentals per sq. feet in Nariman Point are about 1.5 times higher than Manhattan in New York.

Unlike the yellow taxis with the black top, Mumbai's blue cool cabs with silvery white tops are air-conditioned and have electronic meters. So the cabbie can't fool you if you are unaware of the meter conversion rates. They are more comfortable than the yellow and black analog metered taxis and the ride costs a little extra, which is worth every rupee in the hot and humid Mumbai weather.

Also, now there are private yellow cabs, blue cabs and cabs exclusively for women driven by women too.

Today, we celebrate Deepavali (Diwali) , the 'Festival of Lights' where the lights or oil-lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being.
We lit oil lamps near the door, which was adorned by a beautiful toran. Also, oil-lamps are traditionally lit at windows of all rooms of the house.

A string of lights and a lantern hung in the balcony, and rangoli at the door completes the decoration. Fireworks, new clothes and sweets are an important part of the celebration.

We also perform a Lakshmi-Ganesh pooja. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. Ganesha is woshipped at the beginning of any auspicious event.

The essence of Diwali cannot be expressed or explained in a few pictures or sentences.
Tomorrow is the New Year according to the Hindu calendar.

On Wednesday, 22nd October 2008, India launched it's maiden unmanned mission to the moon.

The mission's goals are not just mapping the surface of the moon but also the distribution of elements and minerals. The $80 million mission plans to test systems for a future moon landing.

It was a historic moment for our country.

And while different missions continue to explore the moon, we continue to stare at the moon, photograph it and enjoy romantic moonlit nights.

This is the moon as seen from my balcony on Wednesday night.

Dilkhush Special School

Dilkhush Special school is a school for children with a mental handicap.They have around 100 children from 6-18 years of age and with varying degrees of Mental Handicap yet within the mild and moderate range though they have a few who are also severely handicapped.

Every child is treated as an individual and taught at his/her own pace though in a class situation. In academics they put a lot of emphasis on Functional Academics- studies related to life, and also do a lot to teach the students socially acceptable behaviour.

Mumbai local train is the lifeline of Mumbai. You might not find a Mumbai resident who has never travelled by train atleast once. From the children of age 3 to senior citizens, each one will have their tale to tell about their experiences while travelling by local train.

This Saturday, I and my li'l boy went Diwali shopping. We went to Crawford market area and got great bargains for toys, bedspreads, decorations and lots more.

We then went to 'Badshah Falooda House' and got ourselves this yummy treat a 'Royal Falooda' for me and 'Vanilla Icecream' for Krrish. Falooda is a popular summer drink made by mixing rose syrup( or other flavours like kesar, mango..) with vermicilli and basil seeds (sabza) served with a topping of icecream.

I have always(since childhood) loved to believe that no one leaves the Crawford market shopping area without having a falooda at Badshah's. If you go to Badshah's and see the crowd waiting in queue for the table, you too will think like me. The place was so crowded that I couldn't get a good photo of it this time.

A gola stall at Juhu beach.

Gola is 'ice slush' on a wooden gola stick.
The gola wala pushes the gola stick into the crushed ice ball, pours the syrup generously, with a dash of lime, and sprinkles some masala. All you have to do is slurr..rp it. The most popular flavour is 'Kala Khatta'. They also have icecream and faloodas.

It's fun when you slurrp the gola and the syrup is over, then you tell the gola-wala to add some syrup with a dash of lime and some masala. Then you slurrp again. Now the ice gola is finished, but syrup remains in your glass. Tell him to add some crushed ice to your syrup and treat yourself with a spoon.

You can try it if you are in a naughty mood. I and my friends (in college) used to have two or three rounds of syrup then crushed ice alternately and so on. Have it till you can't have anymore.

The gola-walas usually don't mind as they know you will return to only his stall again for the unlimited treat. Yumm.. my mouth is watering.

'L' for LAUGHTER

I have clicked this set of photos on TV on a show called 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge' which was one of the very successful reality shows on Indian television, about a year ago.

The comedian in the photo is Umer Shariff, a Pakistani comedian, stage, film and TV actor, director and producer. Before he began his act each time he came on stage, he began with funny exppressions & faces like this, and we burst out laughing even before he spoke.

My TV picture quality is excellent, but I took the photos too close, so the poor picture quality :-(

They are not very clear with all those lines but that make the photos look even more funny.

This beautiful lady, Parizad Kolah was the host of the show.

'L' for LIFELINE & LOCAL TRAIN

Mumbai's local train is Mumbai's lifeline.

Mumbai train travel seems like madness to someone who is new to the city or a visitor in the city of dreams. The Mumbai local trains carry more than 6.1 million commuters on a daily basis. It has the highest passenger density of any urban railway system in the world. Overcrowding is a major problem, especially during peak (office going) hours

I saw the two buildings right opposite the bus-stop at Juhu Beach. I haven't walked around here for a long time so I don't know if the two buildings are under construction, or under repair. Can you figure it out?
My little boy insisted that I take a photo of the concrete mixer truck in the photo, so I took this photo. I realised later that it was a good choice.

This is Food Bazaar store at Infiniti mall which I visited last weekend. We often visit Food Bazaar for groceries, fruits and vegetables. With soaring prices of fruits and vegetables in the city, the store sells them at wholesale prices. Shopping for a week's supply gives a saving of atleast a hundred rupees.

This weekend, there is nothing special to do, except sorting and cleaning the home, as we celebrate Diwali festival next month. All my photos are unsorted, so I spend this Sunday water-marking my photos and sorting them for different memes of the week.

This is a common sight in Mumbai city, but most people in the city are used to ignore the sight of people living- eating, washing, bathing and sleeping on the pavement. The three women in the picture were sound asleep, and their small children were playing nearby.

Some of them sell articles at the traffic lights, some beg to live, and some are construction site workers on daily wages, but 'Home' is a distant dream for them.

The 'SADDEST' part of this 'SAD' scene where I took the photo is that it was less than a 5 minute from Infiniti Mall, and very close to Juhu Scheme, where many Bollywood celebrities reside. They are everywhere we pass by, but we cannot do much except giving some food and clothes occasionally.

It wouldn't be fair to blame the state government, with the thousands pouring into the city everyday, hoping to make a living in the 'City of Dreams'

International Day Of Non-Violence

2nd October GANDHI JAYANTI

Today is Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the 'Father Of The Nation'. It is a national holiday celebrated in India to mark the occasion.

On 15 June 2007, the United Nations

General Assembly declared October 2 as

The International Day Of Non-Violence.

In 1920's, Gandhiji and his followers embraced the rough textures of hand-woven cotton, known as khadi. It was a step to provide employment to millions of people during India's freedom struggle, and also carried a message not to use foreign clothes.

Khadi is Indian hand-spun and hand-woven cloth. The raw materials like silk, cotton or wool are spun into threads on a spinning wheel called 'Charkha', which was a symbol of strength and self-sufficiency.

Gandhiji hoped the 'Charkha' would help the people achieve self-sufficiency and independence. So, the 'Charkha' was used as a symbol of the Indian independence movement, and was included on the earlier versions of Flag of India.

I have taken this photo at Khadi Bhandar ( Khadi GramUdyog Bhavan - the sales centre of Khadi & Village Industries Commission) in Fort area in Mumbai. Photography (of articles displayed) is not permitted here, but I could take a couple of photos (after prior permission) of this corner dedicated to Gandhiji.

All cottage industry products like Khadi, Wood crafts, Terracotta, Stone crafts, Papier Mache, Hand looms, Jewellery, Bamboo craft, Leather craft, Metal craft, Jute, Tribal Paintings - handmade soap, matchboxes, agarbatties, honey, mud packs and lotions, traditional handicrafts, purses & wallets, chappals and mojris, idols made of paper-mesh, sandalwood, rosewood and whitewood products, furniture and other wooden articles and lots more, are sold at Khadi Bhandar besides cotton, silk and woolen cloth and readymade garments -kurtas, shirts, salwars...

Even today, the bill (cash memo) given to the customer is made from hand-made paper.

Gola is 'ice slush' on a wooden gola stick. The gola wala pushes the gola stick into the crushed ice ball, pours the syrup generously, with a dash of lime, and sprinkles some masala. The most popular flavour is kala-khatta, made from the fruit 'jamun' or Indian blackberry. The colourful bottles of syrup will tempt you to stop by and slurrp one.

The gola is yummy and refreshing and quenches your thirst but one cannot be sure of quality of the syrup and the water (from which ice is made). There are outlets where you can get good quality syrup with gola ice made of mineral water too.

Infiniti Mall in Andheri is a popular hangout among youth, kids and elders alike.
My favourite mall is Inorbit in Malad, but I visited this mall on Saturday with mom, and my li'l boy to purchase groceries from the Food Bazar store here.

They manage to attract crowds all the time, by hosting different events. Here they are having a kinda football competition. I mean one will defend the goal and the other will try to make a goal. I couldn't find out much as my li'l boy was fast asleep in my arm soon after we finished our shopping in Food Bazar.

View from Kate's Point

Kate's point in Mahabaleshwar (the nearest hill station to Mumbai) is named after Kate, the daughter of Sir John Malcolm, the founder of Mahabaleshwar during the British Raj. It is a huge rock which stands 50 m high.

Echo point is close to Kate's Point. Kate's point offers a breathtaking view of the Krishna valley. From the southern side, it looks like an elephant's head.

Juhu beach is the most famous beach in Mumbai, and a popular tourist spot. Juhu beach is famous for it's sunsets. It is the favourite hangout of Mumbai.

This is the Juinagar Foot Over Bridge in Navi Mumbai near Juinagar Railway Station.

It was constructed by SPACPL, who received the Most Outstanding Bridge National Award (Aesthetics), Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers, 1997, for this bridge.

This octagonal-section twin-arch reinforced concrete pedestrian foot-bridge spans 65m across the Sion-Panvel Expressway, near Juinagar Railway Station.

Short flights of steps near the start of each ramp, and climbing up the arch profile on either side of the horizontal, are intended to discourage motor-cyclists from riding over the ramps and the bridge.
